AI in Healthcare

The conference “Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Science and Law in the Service of Citizens”, promoted by Senator Raffaele De Rosa and organized by the Center for Advanced Studies on Artificial Intelligence (CSAIA), provided an opportunity for dialogue among academia, legal experts, and healthcare management professionals on the opportunities and challenges associated with the adoption of AI in healthcare systems. The event was opened by Pier Paolo Maria Menchetti (EU Commission/EMA Thematic Panel, Ettore Majorana Foundation, President of CSAIA), who highlighted the need for a structured integration of technological innovation, scientific knowledge, and regulatory frameworks as a prerequisite for the development of sustainable digital healthcare. Among the key contributions, Massimo Midiri (University of Palermo) explored the use of artificial intelligence in the management of chronic diseases and in supporting clinical decision-making processes. Don Andrea Ciucci (Pontifical Academy for Life) reflected on the ethical implications of technological innovation in healthcare, emphasizing the principle of human-centered care. Emanuele Buratti (ICGEB) illustrated the contribution of AI to biomedical research, with particular reference to the study of neurodegenerative diseases. Maurizio Nardi (Health Telematic Network) presented practical applications related to telemedicine and remote patient monitoring. From a legal perspective, Raffaella Scotti (University of Naples Federico II) analyzed issues of medical liability connected to the use of artificial intelligence systems, while Suany Mazzitelli (LexisNexis Observatory de légistique) outlined the European regulatory framework, with particular attention to the governance of health data. The topic of cybersecurity was addressed by Ranieri Razzante (University of Perugia), who highlighted the growing vulnerabilities affecting the digital healthcare sector. Franca Camplone (Federmanager Abruzzo and Molise) provided a managerial perspective, focusing on the organizational implications of digital transformation. Oliva Salviati presented the restoration project of the San Giacomo in Augusta Hospital in Rome, while Vivado Moscatelli emphasized the strategic importance of digital skills and European professional certification programs. The concluding remarks underscored that artificial intelligence represents a key enabling factor for the evolution of healthcare systems, while also requiring a multidisciplinary approach based on innovation, security, education, and appropriate regulatory frameworks. The shared objective is the creation of a digital healthcare ecosystem capable of strengthening prevention, diagnosis, and quality of care, while ensuring the full protection of citizens.
