19th edition of the European Railway Award

Conference Presentation

Date and Venue

2 February 2026 at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium

Brief Overview

The European Railway Award once again represented in 2026 the leading European recognition dedicated to the most innovative ideas, advanced technological solutions, and political initiatives that have significantly contributed to the development of rail transport in Europe. Established in 2007, the award has been jointly promoted by the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) and the Association of the European Rail Supply Industry (UNIFE), organizations representing railway operators and the European rail supply industry respectively. The 19th edition, held on 2 February 2026 at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels, brought together industry executives, representatives of European institutions, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the railway sector throughout the continent. During the ceremony, the Rail Trailblazer Award and the Rail Champion Award were presented, recognizing initiatives and leadership that strengthened the strategic centrality of rail within the European agenda. The 2026 edition confirmed the event’s role as a platform for strategic vision, institutional dialogue, and the promotion of excellence within the European railway system.

Scope

The European Railway Award 2026 was part of the broader framework of European initiatives aimed at promoting a more sustainable, interoperable, and competitive railway system. The event brought together over 500 participants, including industry representatives, railway undertakings, European policymakers, and sector experts.

Relevance and Impact

The 2026 edition of the European Railway Award confirmed the event’s role as an indicator of the strategic trajectories of the European railway sector. The awarded initiatives reflected growing attention to the integration of high-speed networks, infrastructure resilience, and multilateral cooperation among Member States.

Organisers and Partners

The event was co-organised by CER and UNIFE, two European associations with complementary roles in the railway sector. The CER (Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies) represented railway undertakings and infrastructure managers across Europe, promoting policies focused on sustainability and the integration of the railway system. The UNIFE (Association of the European Rail Supply Industry) brought together leading European rail technology manufacturers and suppliers, supporting innovation, industrial standards, and global competitiveness. The collaboration between the two organisations ensured an integrated approach combining political, industrial, and infrastructural dimensions.

Some Event Details

The 19th edition of the European Railway Award took place on 2 February 2026 in Brussels, at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts. The evening programme included an initial networking session, institutional addresses, and high-level keynote speeches, followed by the award ceremony and the joint annual CER-UNIFE reception. The event represented a key meeting point between the railway sector and European public decision-makers, strengthening dialogue between industry and institutions at a crucial moment for the European Union’s infrastructure policies. The European Railway Award 2026 was part of the broader framework of European initiatives aimed at promoting a more sustainable, interoperable, and competitive railway system. The event brought together over 500 participants, including industry representatives, railway undertakings, European policymakers, and sector experts. The ceremony was not merely celebratory; it provided a platform for dialogue between public governance and industry, addressing central themes such as European high-speed rail, infrastructure digitalisation, cross-border interoperability, and rail’s contribution to the European Union’s climate objectives. In this context, the award fulfilled both a symbolic and strategic role, highlighting emerging priorities and reinforcing the pan-European dimension of rail transport.

Reason for Participation

My participation is part of the research activities promoted by ERCI – European Railway Clusters Initiative ASBL, with reference to the project LEADER 2030 (GA 101121856), aimed at strengthening the resilience of European rail freight corridors and European industrial capacity. The focus is on integrating critical goods into capacity allocation regimes, which may progressively include priorities related to military mobility, as well as on developing reserve and contingency train paths to ensure operational continuity in crisis situations. Further areas of work concern strengthening corridor-level governance and enhancing real-time performance monitoring and predictive disruption management, key instruments to increase robustness, security, and coordination within the European railway system.

2026 Awards and Recognitions

During the ceremony, the main recognitions of the 2026 edition were presented. The Rail Trailblazer Award 2026 was jointly awarded to a group of European Union Member States that had promoted a shared vision to accelerate the development of a more integrated high-speed rail network at the European level. The initiative was recognised as a concrete contribution to building a more efficient and interconnected pan-European railway infrastructure. The Rail Champion Award 2026 was presented to the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union for its active role in strengthening the centrality of rail transport within the European political agenda, promoting strategic investment and institutional cooperation. Both awards highlighted the growing convergence between political vision and infrastructure development within the railway sector.
Learning Objective

To deepen understanding of strategies, governance, and innovation within the European railway system, consolidating expertise in interoperability, high-speed rail, EU funding, and rail policy in order to strengthen analytical capabilities, systemic vision, and strategic contribution within the sector.
